I've driven past the Buckhorn Saloon a hundred times on my many trips between Lansing and Traverse City, and yet had never stopped in. I always trying to get somewhere else as fast as possible, but on this particular Wednesday I wasn't in a rush, and I bellied up to the bar for a meal. The Buckhorn has an unassuming Up North log cabin feel which is a look I can appreciate.

This is the kind of place that you know has a good burger, and there was a 100% chance I was getting one. But not just any burger, the olive burger, a strange combination of olive and mayo sauce reputedly first made in the Kewpee Hotel Hamburgers in Flint. Why olives on a hamburger, and why in Michigan? Who knows, but it's a nice combination of the salty olives and beef.
The Buckhorn's olive burger was excellent, one of the best I have had. The bun had that little bit of toasty goodness and the burger, well cooked with a hint of crispiness, was outstanding. Generous with the olive sauce as well as the tater tots, I was definitely a fan. If you are a burger person, this is definitely the spot for you. And, I'm happy to report, no extra fee for using a credit card. I'm very appreciative of businesses that don't do that particular money grab.

It was not busy on my Wednesday evening visit with a few tables occupied, but just myself at the bar with a Tigers came on. There were not a lot of beers on tap, but they had a couple of Bell's (Oberon and Two Hearted), always a good sign. Year-round Christmas lights are also a plus in my book.

The Buckhorn Saloon is a definite "yes" in my list of places to eat. If you're on M-115 and looking for something different, this is the spot. The sign said they also had great pizza. I'm afraid I will never find out because if I return, it's right back to the burgers.
