Adventures around Traverse City

Alley by Night

Traverse City does a great job of lighting up its downtown area. Front Street is always well done, but let’s not overlook the J. Smith Walkway.

J. Smith Walkway in Traverse City

J. Smith was Jay Smith, an editor of the Traverse City Record Eagle and the co-founder of the National Cherry Festival, one of the defining events in Northern Michigan. It’s an easy piece of real estate to overlook as a connection between Front Street and the parking lots to the north, but it’s a neat little park.

There was once a fountain, but that was removed last year – it hasn’t worked in several years.

Merry Christmas-ish

It’s a few days after Christmas, but the lights are still up, so if you are looking for a little light for your dark winter nights, here are a few places to check them out. Act fast because you never know when they will disappear until next year.

First, Spruce Street between Seventh and Front is a great drive. Lots of spirit on that street.

If you head down Sixth Street, you’ll see some of those beautiful old houses decorated and ready for Santa.

At the corner of Ninth and Cass, you will see a multi-media extravaganza, with lights tuned to music. My personal favorite was the South Park “O Holy Night”.

Light extravaganza!

On Woodmere you’ll see this impressive display. I’m awed by how long this must take to set up.

His neighbor takes a different approach. I appreciate the effort.

Less is More

Finally, Christmas Alley is between Tenth and Eleventh.

Christmas Time is Here… Almost

Wasn’t it just Halloween?

I’m a big fan of Christmas. While in our temporary location here on Eighth Street, our Christmas decorations are packed away in an undisclosed location. So, I will have to enjoy the decorations of others. And Traverse City has started putting them up. I’ll keep you posted, but they have some white lights on State Street looking good.
