Behind the Scenes

The Common was full of Balicans eating their lunchtime meals at the many tables and benches. The call of vendors was a constant buzz, selling cool water, grilled lizard meat, and dried willom mellons. The day was relatively pleasant, a slight breeze come from the north, and there was very little silt was in the air.

A figure dressed in a loose fitting outfit with highlights of Rees green strode into the Common. This very attractive woman caused many a man to pause in mid bite, to see (hope) that she would be coming near his table.

She stepped up on a short stone wall that held one of the dozen trees in the Common. In her hands she held a short stone cylinder with etchings of green. "Good day," she announced. "I am Ilise, and I will be the representative of House Rees to inform you of the goings on about our great city. This should be a regular position for me, in addition to my normal duties of negotiator, one that I gladly assume."

"I will start with the incident of the Arostenes festivities. The city investigators have made no progress in learning who stole several of Micksha Arostenes' gifts outside The Golden Cup. It was a most bold theft, as the gifts were never out of site of the guards, yet taken they were. Lady Arostenes would be most gracious if someone among you have any details as to the identity of this thief."

"In a rather disturbing report, circles of ash have been found inside King's Field. This hints that a defiler has been casting untoward spells around the crops. As you know, King's Field is the main source of food of Balic, and if such activities continue, the city's long term food supply could be in doubt, as lands that have fallen victim to defiler magic do not readily heal."

"A fire destroyed one of the villas in the northeast corner of the city. The blaze was very intense, and was fortunately contained to one building. The city council has been unable to contact the owner at this time, but until they have, the area immediately surrounding the villa is protected by Wavir guards to prevent any looting."

"And as a final note, if there are any skilled men and women, of any race, who are in need of employment, House Rees is looking to expand several caravan routes, and strong bodies are needed as guards. Please contact us if you are interested."

With a smile to some of the more handsome members of the Common, Ilise gracefully stepped down from her short perch to leave the patrons to their meals.

Behind the Scenes

The ash circles in King's Field are caused by the defiler Ameena, described in Issue 5 of the Balican Crier. Ilise (purposely) left out one fact - that the ground near the ash circles had collapsed to a depth of ten feet. Ameena's spell is getting closer to completion. Esentially, it creates a type of sinkhole that causes the ground to collapse, though it has no effect on solid rock.

The fire in the northeast section of the city is very suspicious. The house was owned by Elkas, a retired adventurer turned merchant who is known to trade in unusual items. Rumors around the Bards Quarter hint that he knows the location of a ruin where he was able to find many rare goods, several of them magical. Investigators suspect that he perished in the blaze, but are holding that announcement until they find a body.
