The Balican Crier, Issue 20
About the Crier "Greetings, my fellow Balicans" began the red-robed representative of House Tomblador. "Let me quickly get to the news of the day so you, the busy citizens of our great city, can get back to work." "An infestation of fire rats has struck Balic. More and more of the rodents have been sighted across the city, the most egregious example being a pack several dozen strong having been spotted near the Wavir docks. Exterminators are needed to relieve the city of the problem, and potential employees can enquire with the three Houses." "The annual Balic Wine Festival has returned to the city. Held at the Agora, the festival displays wines grown on the Balican Peninsula and draws connoisseurs from across the Tablelands. House Arostenes has created a truly stunning fire wine, while House Magestalos continue their success with the notoriously difficult arestches grape that grow only on the peninsula. Their entry into this years festival is truly impressive, but there are nearly a dozen wines at the festival, so everyone will certainly find one to their liking." "Mordelkes made a grand entrance to Balic's gladiatorial circle with a stunning victory in the Criterion over last year's champion, Beldakeen. The half-giant's unexpected quickness led to the defeat of his dwarven opponent. His next appearance will be at the War of Silver gladiatorial competition beginning next week, an event that is expected to bring gladiators from as far at Tyr to compete for the five hundred pieces of silver to the winner. The contest is sponsored by House Tomblador." "Jemsten the tailor has created a new style that has become all the rage among the nobles and wealthy in Balic. His take on the chiton has given new life to a garment that has existed for almost two centuries, and noble houses have placed large orders to have garments of their house colors created requring the tailor to increase the number of workers at his Grayship Street shop, though more workers are needed to meet demand. Jemsten has stated he wanted to give Balicans a unique look to further differentiate themselves from those that travel far and wide to trade in our city, a goal which, I would humbly suggest, he has accomplished." "Though not reported, a spy was discovered lurking in the White Palace. The intruder killed himself with poison before he could be captured and interrogated, but House Wavir suspects he was not from within Balic. None of the House members recognized him, and his complexion is darker than native Balicans. This has concerned House Wavir, and they are discreetly increasing security in the White palace. They have not yet informed the other Houses, but if the threat is deemed to be of concern to the city as a whole and not just the House, the Wavir's will be compelled to do so." "Thousands of fire rats nest underneath Balic, and their numbers have recently swelled too greatly for their warrens to contain. The tunnels the fire rats call home were created by erosion ages ago when water, not silt, filled The Estuary of the Forked Tongue. These tunnels, which range in size from less than a foot in diameter to almost ten feet, run extensively underneath the city and the shores throughout the Balican region." |
