The Balican Crier, Issue 15
About the Crier A stiff wind was blowing across the Balic Common as Leva of House Tomblador strode across the place, taking her position in the center of the eating area to begin her report of the local news. I bid you greetings at the beginning of this new year, she began. And it is especially good, as the council of Balic has recent concluded a new trade agreement with the city-state of Nibenay. From that city we will receive a supply of wood for our craftsmen for construction purposes, as well as a textiles and weapons. To Nibenay, we will supply a small amount of copper from the mines to the south, as well a fair amount of grain products from Kings Field. Another bit of good news: The skimmer Andulphs Pride has returned safely after being three days overdue. The ship was delayed by severe damage taken from a giant attack near Ledo and had to seek a nearby coastal bay in order to make the repairs necessary to complete the journey back to Balic. Some sour news: An expeditionary force formed by the council and led by Prendel to find further mineral resources to the south has not been heard from in four weeks. The group was small, but experienced in desert survival, and this setback does not bode well. To depart on a good note, I would like to inform you that a new tavern has opened on the docks. Krendels Wild Kank replaces The Black Sail, as the latter tavern was closed due to a brawl that resulted in a fire and the death of the owner. The new owner of the building, Rnud, a wonderfully sarcastic mul, promises the new establishment will have more discipline and guarantees to cut fatalities by 75% Thank you, and good day, Leva concluded and joined her fellow Balicans for a drink at the Common. The United Balican Copper Mine, jointly owned by all three major merchant Houses of Balic, has been unusually profitable, though this fact is not common knowledge. Because of the surplus, the council has quietly been shopping its excess supply around and found a willing buyer in Nibenay. Casual inquiries as to what the metal would be used for were met with a not-so-polite None of your business reply, but the goods that Balic is getting in return, especially the wood, will be put to good use. Prendels expedition south met with an unfortunate end when it encountered a buried city in the sand dozens of miles south of Balic. The undead creatures made short work of the party. No search party has been organized to find them. [Authors note: Look for an adventure later this year detailing the fate of Prendel and the buried city.] Finally, Krendels Wild Kank has opened to rave reviews from sailors, at least. It is a rough and tumble place, but out and out brawls that were common at the Sail will not be tolerated. The new owner, Rnud, an ex-gladiator from Tyr, does not take lightly to his property being damaged or his patrons being killed, and over rambunctious revelers can expect a good knock on the head from his club. |
