Behind the Scenes

The Balic common was full of people, lunchtime always the busiest time of day, and almost every chair was filled. Food sellers served their customers from small stands on the east end of the raised area of tiled white marble. Above the main area sat the balcony, where the more well to do of Balic ate their meals away from the crowd of commoners. Dry breezes blew gently through the plaza, bringing only slight relief from the burning sun above.

Into the common from the north strode a man dressed in loose fitting garments of light blue and white, the colors and high quality of his clothing hinting at his association with House Wavir. Most paid him no mind as he strode across the common and stood upon the short white wall that seperated the common proper from the ground only two feet below.

"I bid you greetings, citizens of Balic - the pearl of Athas. I am Berthemon, a humble servant of Lady Tarinne of Wavir, here to speak the news of our beautiful city bordering the glimmering waves of silt."

"I must begin with a most unfortunate event. A poor soul was slaughtered last night in the streets as he walked the northern area of the city. Though I will not bother you with a description of the attack, as such gruesome details would be inconsiterate of me, as you are enjoying your meal, but know that this man was slain by teeth and claw. Though a beast of some sort would appear to be the culprate from the marks on the poor mans body, House Wavir has not ruled out the possiblity that this was foul murder."

The messenger cleared his throat. "Onto more pleasant matters. The Carrelus is looking for men and women to be her crew on her journies across the Silt Sea. The ship is in need of two sailors with steady hands and quick wits. Also requested - should any of you possess The Will - The Carrelus is also searching for a temporary pilot to help guide the ship across the silt. No previous experience is needed, as training is provided. See Captain Geven onboard The Carrelus should you be interested."

"One final note. The House of Arostenes would like to announce the 24th anniversary of Micksha's birth. To celebrate, and to show their humble appreciation for the citizens of Balic for their dedication to freedom, the House of Arostenes will be holding a celebration in the Balic common in the upcoming month. All citizens are welcome and, of course, the refreshments are complimentary, the generosity of the Arostenes."

With that, Berthemon gives a slight bow and leaps down from the short wall to begin his journey back to The White Tower.

Behind the Scenes

Those who go to gain employment on The Carrelus talk to Geven Drinidal (4Rog/4Ftr/1Psi), the captain. Geven is a thoughtful man who likes to meet and speak with the sailors who he will be letting handle his ship. Those who come to his ship do not have to be outstanding sailors, but need to be hard workers who will give their lives, if it comes to that, to defend the ship.

Workers going to The Carrelus will find that the pay for sailors is 2cp, 5 bits a week for standard work. For the skimmer pilot, 5cp is offered, though the captain can be talked up to 7cp. Both the sailors and the pilot will receive an unspecified bonus for deliveries, should the ship reach dock on time.

The Carrelus is in need of a few extra hands because it will be doing a few runs to the towns and villages to the north. These are esencially practice runs. Captain Drinidal has grown wealthy from his trade and for several years has been arranging a particularly profitable run east to the Silt Archipelago. It is a difficult run and he needs well trained staff to handle the inherit dangers of such a long journey. The captain is willing to share in the wealth for good service, and he plans to retire afterwards.
